Eight Excel worlds and a tired standard TMS.

EX‑LOG had been running a standard transport management system since 2014 that never really fit. Dispatch effectively ran across eight parallel Excel sheets; the TMS was only useful for accounting. Shift changes meant 45-minute handovers, because the information wasn't in the system.

As the team grew from 30 to 80 dispatchers, the system didn't keep up. The result was the classic mid-market bottleneck: everyone knows it isn't working, but no one dares take on a full overhaul.

A custom ERP, in six release stages.

We didn't do a "big switchover". We built a new system in six stages and ran it in parallel with the old one. Every stage a productive module, every stage a bit less Excel. After 14 months the old system was redundant.

  • Release 1: Master data (customers, vehicles, drivers, routes)
  • Release 2: Order management and dispatch with drag-and-drop planning
  • Release 3: Live tracking, interfaces to telematics providers
  • Release 4: Billing with DATEV integration
  • Release 5: Driver app (Android), tour documentation, ePOD
  • Release 6: Reporting, controlling, management dashboards

During the intense phase we were on site every week, with the dispatchers, on the real system, with real orders. That's where the adjustments came from that a standard system could never have delivered — the essence of our custom software development.
